Cameroon:Memvé’élé dam impoundment, with capacity of 200 MW, scheduled for 15 August 2016
The Memvé’élé dam, under construction in the area Nyabizan, in the South of Cameroon, will be officially impounded on 15 August 2016, we learn from sources close to the project. This operation, which consists in filling the dam, we learn, will allow the project team and the constructor to observe the behaviour of the different components of this energy infrastructure (embankment, reservoir), in order to judge the reliability.
With an estimated production capacity of 200 MW at peak periods (between 18h and 22h), the dam of Memvé’élé, which will be commissioned in June 2017, is constructed by the Chinese company Sinohydro since 2012 ; and will participate in closing the energy gap suffered by Cameroon.
This energy infrastructure for a total cost of FCfa 420 billion has been principally financed by a loan from Eximbank China, for around FCfa 243 billion, against FCfa 112 billion for the AfDB and FCfa 65 billion for the State of Cameroon.
