Angola's President Jose Eduardo dos Santos appoints daughter as Head of the country's oil company - Sonangol

Santos

Angola's President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who has ruled the country since 1979, has appointed his daughter, Isabel dos Santos (Africa's richest woman) as head of the state oil company, Sonangol. This is coming after he sacked the entire board back in April 2016, when the company started struggling after low crude prices affected its revenue.

We can't put our children's safety in his hands'- Hillary Clinton goes hard on Donald Trump

In one of the most savage speeches of her political career so far, Hillary Clinton, yesterday, threw away the diplomatic tactics that has characterized her previous press addresses and went straight for the jugular, unleashing a series of biting attacks on presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Clinton warned that Trump should not be let anywhere near the nuclear codes because he could start a war when somebody "got under his very thin skin."

"He's not just unprepared -- he's temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires knowledge, stability and immense responsibility,"
Clinton said during her speech on National Security in San Diego, California.

She lambasted his "bragging" approach to foreign policy based on a string of "nasty tweets" and accused him of harboring a "bizarre" closeness with authoritarian leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Communist rulers of China and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.

"We cannot put the safety of our children and grandchildren in Donald Trump's hands. We cannot let him roll the dice with America,"
"He says he has foreign policy experience because he ran the Miss Universe pageant in Russia," Clinton said. "The stakes in global statecraft are infinitely higher and more complex than in the world of luxury hotels."

"I will leave it to the psychiatrists to explain his attraction to tyrants"
"You know, there's no risk of people losing their lives if you blow up a golf-course deal," she said. "But it doesn't work like that in world affairs."
"He also says, 'I know more about ISIS than the generals do, believe me.' You know what? I don't believe him,"
"This is a man who said that more countries should have nuclear weapons, including Saudi Arabia. This is someone who has threatened to abandon our allies in NATO, the countries that work with us to root out terrorists abroad before they strike us at home,"
"He believes we can treat the U.S. economy like one of his casinos and default on our debts to the rest of the world, which would cause an economic catastrophe far worse than anything we experienced in 2008," she continued.

"He has said that he would order our military to carry out torture."
"Imagine Donald Trump sitting in the Situation Room, making life-or-death decisions on behalf of the United States. Imagine him deciding whether to send your spouses or children into battle. Imagine if he had not just his Twitter account at his disposal when he's angry, but America's entire arsenal," she said.

"Do we want him making those calls -- someone thin-skinned and quick to anger, who lashes out at the smallest criticism?" she asked rhetorically. "Do we want his finger anywhere near the button?"

"Still confident.Ghanaian bride-to-be sends message to fat-shamers (see Photos)

"Still confident. Your rubbish comments ain't ruining my happiness. Thanks to all for the compliments and best wishes, am honored". That is Ghanaian bride-to-be message to trolls for their negative comments about her weight.

Mzznaki Tetteh, who describes herself as a "nurse, a sweet girl who loves fashion, a student, and an achiever", posted the most beautiful photos to celebrate her upcoming wedding, and it went viral. While most of the comments were sweet and complimentary, others were ugly. But the sweet-faced nurse isn't letting a few haters ruin her happiness as she continues to post more photos on Instagram.

And neither is her fiance, Prince Kojo Amoah. In a recent interview, he said: "I am so proud of my woman and I don't care what anybody says out there"

The couple will be tying the knot on June 25. Congrats to them!

It has been confirmed that the legendary Prince, 57, died of a drug overdose. The "Purple rain" singer - who died on April 21 - passed away after an opioid overdose, a law-enforcement official told the Associated Press.
Investigators had been reviewing whether Prince died of an overdose and have been questioning a doctor who was prescribing him drugs in the weeks before his death.
Prince was allegedly suffering from an addiction to pain killers and had representatives reach out to Dr. Howard Kornfeld, a national authority on opioid addiction treatment, because Prince was "dealing with a grave medical emergency," said William Mauzy, an attorney working with the Kornfeld family.

Cameroon set for Mauritania test

http://images.supersport.com/2015/6/
African powerhouse Cameroon is looking to impress when they host Mauritania in a 2017 Group M Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match in Yaounde on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 4:00pm.

The four-time Afcon champions are looking to turn around their poor showings of late which have seen them unable to qualify for the continental tournament in 2012 and 2013, and then suffer a first round exit in the 2015 tourney.

Indomitable Lions coach Volker Finke, though, has a tough task ahead of him with a number of key players missing from his squad for this opening qualifying match against Mauritania.

Volker has to do without the likes of Schalke players Joël Matip and Eric Choupo-Moting, goalkeeper Pierre Sylvain Abogo and left-back Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo.

Finke, however, has injected new blood into the side hoping to breathe new life into the side in the form of FC Sochaux’s 22-year-old striker Karl Toko Ekambi, Paris Saint-Germain’s 17-year-old midfielder Félix Eboa Eboa and FC Cluj’s 22-year-old striker Justin Mengolo.

Cameroon will also be coming into this match high in confidence after beating Burkina Faso 3-2 and drawing 1-1 with DR Congo in the build-up to this match.

Mauritania, on the other hand, are minnows on the African continent and will be looking to cause an upset against Cameroon.

Coached by Corentin Martins, Mauritania have never reach the continental tournament, but their mentor is confident they can cause a few upsets.

“We need to keep faith, even if we are here to learn at the highest level. We are going to give our best to seal this qualification,” Martins is quoted as saying.

The other two teams in Group M are South Africa and Gambia who face each other on Saturday in Durban.

Taxi owners in the capital are ordered to renovate their vehicles in the run-up to the 2016 AfCON

Poste-centrale taxi
One month. This is the deadline that the Regional Transport Delegate for the Central region has given to owners of city taxis operating in the Cameroonian capital, to renovate their vehicles, we learn in an official communiqué. After this deadline, the offenders will have their vehicles impounded, this regional manager from the Ministry of Transport stresses.

Josué Meyoua, who in his communiqué was very specific on the different repairs to be made on the taxis in the city of Yaoundé, reveals that this measure is meant to prevent giving a bad image of the Cameroonian capital during the Africa Women Cup of Nations football tournament, which will take place between November and December 2016 in Yaoundé and Limbé.

For the moment, the taxi drivers or owners’ union have not yet officially responded to this injunction. But, in the background, some of them are applauding the initiative of the regional delegate, considering, they claim, the increasingly dilapidated state of several taxis operating in the Cameroonian capital.

What is Neymar and Justin Beiber doing together? (watch video)

Extravagant hairstyles, playing in front of big crowds, a hit with the women and loathed by other men... Neymar can be quite the character. Justin Bieber on the other hand, oh boy.

It's fair to say that Neymar is quite the Justin Bieber of the footballing world, but what happens when two Biebers meet?

Well, the video below will show you, and it's quite surprising.

Firstly, it's not Neymar singing, which is a relief. We've seen too many footballers taking to the mic of late and it's not a pretty sight.
Justin Beiber
Looks like Bieber is doing the sporting celebrity rounds at the moment
In fact its the other way round
Yes, Justin Bieber is playing football, and he's not mucking about, either. The Sorry singer is doing KEEPY-UPPIES with the Brazilian wonderkid.
And, annoyingly, he's actually quite good.

In the video above the ball fails to touch the floor once as Bieber and Neymar keep it up with ease.

And just as it looks as though all is lost, the Canadian-born pop star pulls out a couple of cool, controlled headers to steady the ship.

France boss Deschamps ‘surprised’ by Cameroon performance

Deschamp France Coach
France coach Didier Deschamps says he was surprised by Cameroon’s performance after the Euro 2016 hosts snatched victory.

Deschamps and Co. prevailed 3-2 thanks to Dimitri Payet’s 90th-minute free kick in Monday’s international friendly. Payet’s winner came just two minutes after Cameroon equalized via Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

While it was far from an ideal performance, Deschamps was happy to win ahead of Euro 2016.

“There have been problems because the opponent has qualities,” Deschamps said. “They have not thought to defend. There are things we can do better, of course.

“For some it is a long time without competition. We will look at what to fix. I was surprised by this team because I watched a lot of their recent games. I found them much better than in their last matches I’ve seen.”

France hit the front in Nantes thanks to Blaise Matuidi’s 20th-minute volley, but Vincent Aboubakar leveled proceedings two minutes later as Cameroon threatened on the counterattack.

Olivier Giroud responded to boos from some of the home support outside the Stade de la Beaujoire to put France ahead four minutes before half-time.

Cameroon hit back again, this time capitalizing on an error in France’s defense in the 88th minute as it seemingly earned a draw until Payet’s stunning winner.

“We can always improve everything. This is the first game that Adil [Rami] played with Laurent [Koscielny],” Deschamps added. “We had more quality and that’s why we have not done everything right.

“On the defensive side, not everything was perfect and it deserves more communication.”

Cameroon:Zng Smart Card Factory is the company through which Arthur Zang will manufacture magnetic cards

Arthur Zang
We now have a little more information about the project on which Cameroonian engineer Arthur Zang is currently putting the finishing touches, after the success of his Cardiopad, the first African medical tablet, which continues to win more awards throughout the world.

The inventor of the Cardiopad has indeed just revealed that the new company specialised in the manufacture of magnetic cards, which he is getting ready to launch in the Cameroonian capital, is called Zng Smart Card Factory. It will help generate, Arthur Zang repeats, 150 direct jobs.

According to the future CEO of this magnetic card factory, the premises are already available. There is only the need now, we learn, to proceed with the customs clearance of the 600 tons of equipment currently stocked at the Douala port, in the economic capital of the country. An operation which could be hardly made possible the FCfa 23 million prize just won by the Cardiopad, at the end of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation organised by the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom.

The Cameroon Film Industry CFI on heat;political instability

Mr Agbor on the left and Mr Otia on the right
The young and yet to blossom Cameroon Film Industry has been through some ups and downs as far as leadership is concerned. Though this year, 2016 she was able to host the very first International Film Festival CAMIFF, it seems like the battle for leadership is still far from being stable.

Karawa's Diary was present at the General Assembly that took place at Residence Carlos on Saturday the 28th. At this general assembly a new exco for the CFI was put in place. They were all presented to actors and actress as well as given the authority to lead the rest by the Delegate of culture who was also present. The delegate asked the new exco to surprise everybody because as it has been the case over the years, new people are elected and nothing is done

Just before I was getting comfortable with the fact that the CFI is about to take a new turn and let the dust settle, it seems I was thinking wrongly. Yesterday the 1st of June, Mr Agbor Gilbert the first PRO of the CFI and the brain behind CAMIFF took onto his Facebook wall to pass out a warning to Mr. Otia Vitalis who is the supposed former chairman of the CFI. He posted the following

Does this mean that the CFI has two different bodies that run under two different leaders of same banner the CFI?

Well, we only hope that this will be sorted out amicably and grow our young movie industry.

Ambe's Rendezvous with Money and fame; The flip side of the nude cover art

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizYrCTpoMtwDeGFUf-q7Hw7XlMkxez6x3X3UDKkBTivejrzNqttMxBgk3aEdEvtB-o1lD8q4lzbcSvNA7N4fmn-23X6R4E5PaY6ZQE1E_LQPY7rzGhZniGIVXXGbE2wJGrLKIYzMfaD0Sl/s1600/
Ambe
Cameroon's rising Afro sensation Ambe is caught up in social media blacklash over his supposed album cover art titled La Star which he made public last week.

Ambe is from the Northwest Region of Cameroon, precisely from Bafut, Mezam. He is also known as  'RendezVousPikin' with huge ambition to impact peoples life with music and become successful. Ambe started his career way before Obama became president of America. He was known formerly by the stage name Denzyl.

From 2015 to 2016, he has released a couple of singles and videos one of which aired on MTVbase. Some of these singles were rendezvous, double, les filles de mon pays. Ambe's songs are mostly geared towards a yet to be archived wealth and fame which he must get in the future. Just like he stated in his song Double, and I quote, "good salary na my portion, Ferrari na my portion, Boughatti na my portion ey"

Looking at Ambe's hustle he is craving for fame and wealth just like any other artist will. Notwithstanding,  the release of the cover art of his yet to be released album was proof Ambe will do anything to have a rendezvous with money and fame.
ambe in nude cover art
Cover at for the yet to be released Album of Ambe

Karawa's Diary was not going to say anything about it but KD readers wanted to know my opinion as to whether this cover art was uncalled for or not

On the other hand, I know that many took this with so much dismay and disappointment as to how Ambe is not passing across a positive message as he has been doing in his previous arts. But come to think of it, was his pose on that cover art a new thing as far as the entertainment industry is concerned? I don't think it is strange to see this in a world of arts. Since I am opinionated, I am thinking that Ambe posing nude on his cover art was intended to pass across a message because music in itself is art and sometimes the things we do in this art of music all combine to pass across this single message; the message intended to be heard. Some of this things could be posing nude on the cover art.

What beats my imagination is not that he was nude on his cover art, but rather, what was the message behind that pose? Is Ambe trying to say I am as real as when I was born,No faking?or could he be talking about a transition in his life ( the cover art has wrinkles that signify motion). That cover art for me raised curiosity. The curiosity is not as to why he posed naked but as to what message is behind it.

However, The album title says La Star. If the message the afro sensation is trying to pass across is that you need to go naked to be a star then I too am disappointed in the message and pose but if this cover art is to say strip yourself off of every faking and be as real as you are to be a star then its arts. Sometimes it is hard to take a giant step to pass that one message because we live in a world where people must talk like I am doing now and sometimes the talks can be spirit crashing. Well, I am not in essence in any form promoting nudity especially as it has been the case with Cameroonian girls putting out sex tapes on social media (click and read more)

Could it also be a possibility for a publicity strategy? If this is a ploy to draw needed attention on the soon to be released album then it is for sure working out for Ambe as everyone has been ranting on the issue on social media ever since its release. As they say, publicity is never bad publicity so far as it meets up with the goals set in place. Yes its nudity, but beyond it might be that work of art that intends to conceal and convey a hidden message in itself.

Maybe if the picture is looked beyond the pose it might breed a better message.I hope to get close and personal with Ambe on this.

Karawa's Diary will definitely keep you updated with this upcoming album and the mystery behind the cover art.

Watch Ambe's Double below.

24 year old Teacher impregnated by her 13 year old student

A 24-year-old teacher, Alexandria Vera, has been accused of having sex with a 13 year old, eighth grade student.
Vera claims that the pair are in love and that the boys’ parents knew about their relationship and even approved of it. She added that his parents allowed him to sleep over at her apartment on numerous occasions. And that she would drop him off at the bus stop for school the morning afterwards.

Vera said the teen was a student in her English 8th grade class and that the romance started over social media after they met in her summer class.

The middle school teacher explains that the then-13-year-old first contacted her via Instagram, and their relationship grew from there and people seemed to notice. She said he missed a class one day so she sent him a message asking him why he missed class and that was when he asked for her number.

She said one time she went to his house for school and he invited her in and introduced her to his parents as his girlfriend and his parents accepted her.
She said the first time they had sex was sometime in September of last year when she dropped him of at home and his parents were not at home.

She also said a lot of people at school noticed that they were both in a relationship.

One student told ABC 13:
“He like grabbed her butt, and everybody saw it. And then they were talking about it.”
Vera said she got pregnant in January and told investigators that the teen's family was “excited” and “very supportive” when they found out. However, court documents reveal that she became nervous after Child Protective Services visited her school and interviewed the couple about their relationship so she eventually aborted her unborn baby.

Aldine ISD’s Stovall Middle School, located near Houston, Texas, has since released the following statement:
Aldine ISD has been made aware that charges have been filed against a former Stovall Middle School teacher involved in inappropriate behavior with a male student. When the allegation was made in April, the teacher was immediately removed from the school and placed on administrative leave. Aldine ISD Police investigated the incident and turned their findings over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The safety and security of Aldine ISD’s students and staff remains a priority of the school district.
Vera is charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child. She turned herself in on Wednesday to officers at Montgomery County Jail in Conroe, Texas, after police issued a warrant for her arrest.

Vera's bond was set at $100,000. She has met the bail condition and has been released.

Ryan Giggs set to quit Man Utd and end 29-year association with club after being demoted by Jose Mourinho

Manchester United legend and assistant coach under David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal, Ryan Giggs has agreed to end his working relationship with the club after 29 years of service, according to an exclusive report from Mirror UK.

Ryan Giggs met with new Man U coach Jose Mourinho this week at Carrington and was offered a more junior role at the club. He was offered a role to bridge the transition of players from the youth team to the first team which didn't go down well with him, as he was the assistant manager...

Read excerpts from the report by Mirror UK below

'United's most decorated player is back from a break in Dubai and is said to be ready to leave Old Trafford for a new challenge.

'Giggs, who served as United No.2 under Louis van Gaal, has been offered a lesser role under newly-appointed boss Jose Mourinho.'

'Although Giggs has a huge emotional bond with United, it is understood he is ready to break it to prove himself as a manager in his own right.

'United are keen for Giggs, 42, to stay but understand his reluctance to accept a less prominent role under Mourinho, who is bringing in his own backroom team.'

'The self-styled Special One will appoint long-standing assistant Rui Faria as his No.2, meaning any subsequent role Giggs accepts will be a step down for the United legend, who made 963 appearances for them.'

'After a year as a player-coach under Moyes and two seasons as Van Gaal's assistant, Giggs now considers himself ready to take on a managerial role and prove himself outside of Old Trafford.

'Giggs is desperate to manage United but, having been twice overlooked for the role, when David Moyes and Van Gaal were sacked, accepts he must move on elsewhere.'

Cameroonian girls in sex tape 'wahala"!

Gang of 3: Maryland Sexual Vampires
Right Photo= Mekone Sone, Left Photo= .Anita Henry,
Middle Photo= Slimmix Phonix- those are their Facebook names though one of the accounts does not exist anymore.

These three Maryland based Cameroonian girls released a sex tape this week online which went viral on other social media platforms with Mekone Sone as the alleged ring leader. The audio of the victim whose sex tape was released was also made available online and it had her crying profusely and she repeatedly mentioned Anita Henry for destroying her life. Mindful of the fact that Cameroon's president told youths to make use of technology, I cant come to glimpse with the fact that this is the chosen path taken by learned and grown up girls.

Karawa's Diary putting up the names and photos of the victim and those who allegedly committed the act is so that this girls can be lawfully called to order because this act is that of abuse of human rights especially against another failure woman.

Is making sex tapes a crime? No, is making it public especially against the owners will a crime? definitely yes. I think Cameroonians need to make a move as concerns situations like this before things get sour and it becomes a normal thing owing to the fact that this is not the first of its kind.

See the Amount of beer consumed in Cameroon over soft drinks in 2015

..
The breweries company in Cameroon, which has just revealed the figures on sales of beer, dominated the market flowing over 510,430,000 liters.

Overall sales of beer in Cameroon in 2015 amounted to 6.6 million hectoliters (or 660 million liters), including imports. This was revealed limited company brasseries of Cameroon (SABC), in its annual report presented on 18 May at its general assembly.

Which also indicates replied that the market has been dominated by the SABC with 78.0% of sales, followed by Guinness (14.4%) and the Cameroon Union of breweries 7.2%.

The report notes that sales by the SABC during the year 2015, 510 430 100 liters, are down 5.7% compared to 2014. "This result in the decline reflects the impact negative of higher excise duties on beer sold by SABC which resulted in a 20% increase in the price of beer, the increased competitiveness of the Guinness small model, favored by a smaller increase in its price, 50 CFA 550 CFA francs, or 9% increase, hyper competitor activity in promotion, said the SABC.

As regards soft drinks, the overall market in 2015 is estimated at around 4,000,000 hectoliters (over 40 million liters), with growth of 16.7% over 2014. "SABC has sold 2,366,337 hl free soft drinks out and out export, an increase of 7.1% over the previous year. This result is particularly honorable insofar as it was generated with products that cost 20% more expensive than those of competitors, "says breweries in Cameroon.

2017 Africa Cup of Nations: Algeria, Cameroon close to finals

Cameroon's Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo, right
Two more teams can book their places at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Thursday and Friday’s qualifiers.

Algeria need a just draw in Seychelles on Thursday while Cameroon require a win in Mauritania the next day to qualify for Gabon.

Tunisia will lose the chance of winning Group A if Djibouti beat them on Friday and Liberia beat Togo on Sunday.

The other game on Friday is Libya playing Morocco, who have already qualified for the finals in Gabon.

Twenty more matches over the weekend complete the penultimate round of qualifiers.

The group winners and the best two runners-up will qualify for the finals.

Before the upcoming qualifiers, Benin are the best second-placed side with eight points, while Tunisia, Mauritania, Uganda, Central African Republic all have seven.

AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS QUALIFIERS:
Thursday: Friday:
Grp J – Seychelles v Algeria (1400GMT) Grp A – Djibouti v Tunisia (1330GMT)
Grp M – Mauritania v Cameroon (1700GMT)
(Kick-off times via Caf website) Grp F – Libya v Morocco (1800GMT)
Since their last Group J qualifiers against Ethiopia in March, Algeria have parted company with French coach Christian Gourcuff.

A 7-1 win and 3-3 draw in those matches against Ethiopia leaves the Desert Foxes five points clear at the top of their group and with a better head-to-head record over the Walya Antelopes.

He has been replaced with two interim coaches Yazid Mansouri and Nabil Neghiz, who are wary of playing on an artificial pitch in Seychelles.

The duo will also be aware that Seychelles are unbeaten at home in the qualifiers so far, after a draw with Ethiopia and win over Lesotho.

Algeria will also be without several key players, with Sporting Lisbon’s Islam Slimani suspended while English Premier League champion Riyad Mahrez and Porto’s Yacine Brahimi are both injured.

Instead they will look to an attacking trio of Lyon’s Rachid Ghezzal, Sofiane Feghouli of Valencia and El Arabi Soudani, who has scored four goals in the campaign so far.

Belgium’s Footballer of the Year Sofiane Hanni, who plays for Anderlecht, is set to make his debut for Algeria having played for France at youth level.

A loss for Seychelles will mean they are unable to win the group and leave them hoping several other results go their way this weekend to have any chance of a best second-placed spot.

On Friday, Cameroon could also join Morocco and hosts Gabon at the 2017 Nations Cup if they can win in Mauritania.

The Indomitable Lions are currently one point ahead of their opponents after the first four matches of the campaign.

Cameroon coach Hugo Broos left captain Stephane Mbia out of his squad for the qualifier and Tuesday’s friendly 3-2 loss to France.

Forward Benjamin Moukandjo and Nicolas Nkoulou both missed the France game with injuries too.

Tunisia also play on Friday knowing they could lose the chance of winning Group A if they lose in Djibouti and then Liberia secure a win over Togo on Sunday.

In that scenario Liberia would earn themselves a placey at the Nations Cup finals for the first time since 2002.

Djibouti have already been eliminated and have yet to win a single point from their opening four matches, scoring just once and conceding 16 goals.

Friday’s other match sees Morocco take on Libya in Tunisia after the game was moved due to the ongoing problems in Libya.

Morocco have already secured their place in the finals after a 1-0 win away and a 2-0 victory at home over Cape Verde in March maintained their 100 per cent winning record in the qualifiers.

Libya meanwhile realistically need a win to keep alive any hope they have of grabbing second spot in Group F.

Killing of gorilla to save 4-year-old boy at Ohio zoo sparks outrage

The killing of a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday after a 4-year-old boy tumbled into the ape's enclosure triggered outrage and questions about safety, but zoo officials called the decision to use lethal force a tough but necessary choice, Reuters report.

Over 2,000 people signed a petition on Change.org that sharply criticized the Cincinnati Police Department and the zoo for putting down the animal and called for the child's parents to be "held accountable for their actions of not supervising their child."

Cincinnati police on Sunday said the parents had not been charged, but that charges could eventually be sought by the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Authorities did not identify the child or his parents. The family could not be reached on Sunday. A Facebook page titled "Justice for Harambe" had more than 3,000 likes by Sunday afternoon, a day after the 400-pound (181-kg) gorilla was shot dead about 10 minutes after encountering and dragging the child.

The animal, named Harambe, was a Western lowland gorilla, an endangered species, and the zoo said it had intended to use him for breeding.

"If we think it's acceptable to kill a gorilla who has done nothing wrong, I don't think our city should have gorillas," Manvinder Singh posted on the Facebook page.

A blog post on the website for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals questioned why it was necessary to kill the gorilla and whether zoos could meet the needs of such animals.

"A 17-year-old gorilla named Harambe is dead, and a child is in the hospital. Why?" blogger Jennifer O'Connor wrote. "Western lowland gorillas are gentle animals. They don't attack unless they're provoked."

Witnesses told local television that the boy repeatedly expressed a desire to join the gorilla in the zoo habitat. Moments later, the boy crawled through a barrier and fell about 12 feet (3.7-meters) into a moat surrounding the habitat, where Harambe grabbed him, zoo officials said.

It was the first time in the 38-year history of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden's gorilla exhibit that an unauthorized person was able to get into the enclosure, zoo president Thane Maynard said on Saturday.

"They made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy's life," he said, adding that a member of the zoo's Dangerous Animal Response Team fired the shot that killed the ape.

Maynard said the team decided to use deadly force instead of tranquilizers to subdue the gorilla because it could have taken some time for the drug to take effect when an animal was in agitated state.

The child was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Hospital officials, citing privacy laws, declined to say on Sunday whether the child had been released or to disclose any details about his injuries.

The Cincinnati zoo was open on Sunday, although Gorilla World was expected to be closed indefinitely. Neither the zoo nor the fire department responded to a request for comment.

Ivorians, Ghana, Cameroon get new kits

lions new kit
Over the past decades, PUMA has dedicated its finest and boldest designs in football to its African federations. Continuing this spirit of design and innovation, PUMA has developed a new evoKNIT kit to be worn by Cameroon in their friendly international against France tonight, and Ivory Coast vs Gabon later this weekend. Ghana will try out their new technological design in a game later this year.

These games become a real life testing ground for the future of PUMA’s football performance technologies in kit design. These shirt prototypes feature evoKNIT technology – a knitted design for lightweight, form-fitting comfort as well as thermoregulation and performance enhancement properties. The seamless torso construction is the first ever on pitch.

This shirt features a dynamic moisture management system. Two yarns create a push-pull effect, the yarn closest to the skin rapidly removes sweat from the athlete’s body. The top layer yarn then pushes the moisture away and completely removes it. To achieve this, PUMA worked with highly technical machinery that until now, has never been used in the football industry. The innovative construction process creates comfort from the start as the shirt is first built as a seamless tube to which the sleeves, also tubes, are added.

These Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Ghana shirts reinforce power, regulate temperature, and allow for freedom of movement. They enable our African teams to play at their loudest volume.

Richard Bona & Mandekan Cubano – Heritage (Album Presentation) by Quincy Jones [+video]

RICHARD BONA
Richard Bona’s seemingly effortless voice, fierce skills on the bass, unique songwriting/arranging expertise and ability to learn just about any instrument simply from watching, position him as a rare African artist to have established an international reputation that transcends cultural boundaries. His new album is a compilation of art inspired by the shared heritage, rich folkloric and traditional music of West Africa and Cuba.

Sit back and experience art with a purpose; Richard Bona and the Mandekan Cubano have carefully crafted a fusion of sounds, which merge cultures together through their ability to speak the universal language of music.

More than just a statement put to a tune, music is an outpouring of one’s soul in a deeply personal manner and that is exactly what “Heritage” serves to do. It is a window into the years of oral stories that have been passed down and placed in the musical prowess of Bona and the Mandekan Cubano.

Richard Bona
While this is Bona’s first official Afro-Cuban record, it is not his first endeavor in the African music scene—rather, it is the culmination of his decades of experience in various genres, which produces an authentic expression of culture through sound. Preserving the traditions of the western African slave “Cabildos,” Bona and the Mandekan Cubano bring the music, dance, rituals, and oral history of the island to the comfort of your home.
Seeking inspiration from his origins, the themes of Bona’s art address international issues, which mirror his desire of utilizing music to take a stance on issues affecting the oppressed or the forgotten cultures of the people who so courageously paved the way for the life we presently live. The polyrhythmic beat felt in many of the tracks paradoxically serves as the bridge between African and Cuban music.
In present day society, we often get trapped into rigid lifestyles that reflect only one type of musical influence or culture. However, our world is vast, diverse, and is supported by the beautiful interweaving of multiple backgrounds. Without such diversity, our world would cease to be, quite frankly, a “world.” Its very definition reveals that it is “the earth, together with all of its countries, people, and natural features.”

As a result, this album serves to educate listeners of the beauty that is created from remaining true to ones roots, yet also stepping outside of oneself to learn from others. Separately we succeed, but together, we thrive.

A Christian church in Germany has held a funeral for a teenage immigrant who was killed fighting for ISIS after becoming a Muslim and running away to Syria.

The 17-year-old, named as Florent Prince N., was born in Cameroon and raised as a Christian in Hamburg before converting to Islam and becoming radicalised.

Now, a year after his death in Syria, the church he once attended – St. Pauli in Hamburg – has held a controversial service in memory of the militant.

According to Breitbart, the service was organised by Sieghard Wilm, pastor of the protestant church.

While still a Christian, Florent was said to be active in the St. Pauli Church community.

Pictures show his mother Florence arriving at the church ahead of the ‘multi-faith’ ceremony while a large photo of the teenager was displayed inside
But the website reports that he converted to Islam in his early teens and soon became radicalized.

He traveled to Syria in May last year and died after sending an audio message to Germany saying he was disillusioned with ISIS.

The funeral service has sparked controversy in Germany with some questioning the decision to hold a memorial for someone who had left the country to join a terror organisation.
But Mr Wilm told the German website SHZ.de: ‘We cannot deny this is a difficult situation.
‘I can tell you as a pastor at St. Pauli, that I have also laid to rest more killers. A man remains a man. Even a person who has offended against someone. Even such a man has relatives who mourn him.’
Florent’s mother was still a Christian, prompting moves to hold the service at St Pauli, Breitbart reports.

The pastor said he had observed Florent’s behaviour when he became radicalised and changed his name to Bilal. But he soon lost contact with the teenager and saw that he had ‘been estranged from me and his former social environment’.

Mr Wilm said the funeral would act as a ‘safe place’ for the family to grieve and that the service would help with ‘learning and respect among religions’.

Cameroonian Arthur Zang’s heart-monitoring tablet named best tech innovation for Africa

Arthur Zang

Telemedicine device for monitoring heart conditions remotely has been named the best invention for the African continent by the Royal Academy of Engineering in the second year of the Africa Prize.

The invention dubbed the Cardio-Pad and developed by Cameroonian engineer Arthur Zang allows village doctors who have no access to sophisticated equipment to take a quick scan of a patient’s heart function and send it wirelessly to a specialist who can provide analysis in 20 minutes.

“I was very impressed by Arthur Zang and his team, which aims to help patients in communities where access to cardiac specialists is limited,” said head judge Malcolm Brinded CBE FREng.

“The Cardio-Pad should allow quick, low cost, cardiac illness detection and monitoring in rural villages and towns, addressing a huge African health challenge.”

It is estimated that almost one in two Africans over the age of 25 suffers from hypertension and nearly 20 million suffer from a cardiovascular disease. However, the condition frequently goes undetected until the advanced stages due to the lack of properly equipped medical facilities especially in rural areas.

Zang, who has been awarded £20,000 in prize money, has recently established a factory assembling Cardio-Pads in Yaoundé. Hundreds of devices have already been sold in Cameroon, Gabon, India and Nepal.

The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation encourages talented sub-Saharan African engineers from all disciplines to develop solutions for challenges facing the local communities.

The Prize, which was launched last year, provides training and mentoring to the most promising candidates selected from a pool of submissions.

12 shortlisted candidates competed in this year’s challenge, during which they received six months of couching on business plan development and marketing.

Three runners-up received £10,000 each. These include a digital project in Kenya providing information and advice to pregnant women and new mothers, a South-African micro-grid technology for rural electrification and an Ugandan device for preventing electricity theft.
