On Sunday, June 5, 2016 Nigerian soul singer BrymO caused a storm on Twitter when he advised a fan to drop out of school and chase his dreams. BrymO unknowingly threw a flame at a keg of gunpowder. He was dragged by the Twitter know-it-alls for advising someone to drop out of school just like he did.
He was bashed and mauled for his honest opinion. The narrative later went on to say that BrymO isn’t a successful artiste and his music is sub-par. The streets of Twitter can be brutal if your opinion makes a lot of people uncomfortable.
Personally I see nothing wrong with what BrymO said. He advised the young man based on his own perspective about life. The singer dropped out of school and now has more than a decent career. What did you expect him to say again?
A lot of people do not like to face the cold facts about life. Listen not everyone who goes to school will live a decent life and not every dropout will turn out to be a beggar. This is just the truth. However we live in a society that writes down rules have been written before you were born.
Our grandparents belonged to the colonial generation, a generation that believed one must have a degree before you can make it in life. This belief was passed down to our parents which has also been passed down to us. The truth is that you do not need a degree to make it in life. You have to be educated but the possession of a degree is not necessary.
